Ifield Parish Map
Medieval burgage plots

Various development driven excavations to the west of Crawley High Street in recent years have revealed evidence of C12 burgage plots and industrial activity, including the waste (slag) from iron production and signs of flax processing, confirming the existence of organised settlement in the far east of the parish within a century or so of the Norman Conquest. The discovery of late C11 'sandy ware' pottery in this area strongly suggests much earlier settlement.
